Sustainability

OUR COMMITMENT TO A HAPPY PLANET.

EAT HAPPY stands for hand-rolled, freshly made sushi and Asian snacks. We create products that make people happy. Sustainability is also close to our hearts. That is why we are committed to people and nature, and produce our products responsibly.

All of this takes place within the framework of our sustainability programme, through which we are committed in three different areas:

EAT HAPPY is more than a brand for hand-rolled, freshly made sushi and Asian specialities. EAT HAPPY stands for quality.

To help limit climate change, the careful treatment of ecosystems on land and in water is at the heart of our activities. That is why we continuously analyse and optimise every step we take – from the ingredients through preparation in the shop to consumption. Here you can find out what we are doing in concrete terms:

Bring Your Own Box

The new packaging directive has been in force since 1 January 2023. On this basis, we invite you to bring your own reusable box to the EAT HAPPY shop. That way, the sushi chefs on site can prepare your favourite products fresh and pack them sustainably. You can find more information here.

Eat Happy rescue bags
EAT HAPPY Rescue Bag

In the EAT HAPPY Rescue Bag we offer selected EAT HAPPY products from the previous day at a discounted price in our shops across Germany. Thanks to the high quality of the ingredients and the fresh preparation, the sushi is still good and fit to eat. Over the course of a year, this allows us to save up to 2.4 million sushi boxes from being thrown away.

Soy sauce & wasabi on demand

Since June 2021 we no longer include individually packaged soy sauce and wasabi with our sushi boxes. Instead, we offer both separately – either portioned free of charge to take away, or in a plastic bottle or tube to buy and keep in stock.

Fish & co – controlled quality

Fish is an important component of our range. That is why we place great importance on fair conditions in farming and fishing. We use exclusively sashimi-grade salmon. It comes 100 per cent from Europe and from suppliers we have worked with for years and are in constant dialogue with. The selected aquaculture farms in Norway meet strict farming standards. This is how we ensure the highest quality in our salmon. Our raw tuna comes exclusively from healthy stocks, is completely natural and contains no additives. The masago and surimi hold MSC certificates.

Keeping an eye on our ecological footprint

Keeping our ecological footprint as small as possible matters to us. That is why we carry out energy audits and a CO2 assessment for our shops and head office every year. This helps us identify where we need to take action to save CO2.

Icon Heart A diverse society

The people at EAT HAPPY are our foundation. They bring their ideas, knowledge and skills to the table. The colourful mix of personalities and know-how is the basis of EAT HAPPY's success. But we also see our responsibility towards people outside the company. We actively promote equal opportunities and diversity, and cohesion plays an important role for us. Here you can find out more:

Employees talking to each other
Equal opportunities

We place great value on equal opportunities for everyone and support our employees in their professional and personal development. We offer them an environment in which they can contribute and grow. We are proud of our women power: more than 65 per cent of the workforce is already female, and around half of all female employees hold a management position – with responsibility for one or more shops, or as a manager in head office. In both areas we actively encourage development – including moves from a shop role into an office job. Dialogue plays an important role in employee development. We ensure this through regular feedback meetings and dedicated contacts responsible for professional development.

Diversity

People of more than 85 nationalities work for EAT HAPPY. This diversity is also reflected in our corporate culture. All our employees provide valuable impetus for greater tolerance and contribute their ideas across every area.

Diversity

Our regular Diversity Round Table encourages dialogue in order to advance the topic of diversity within the company and beyond. Our activities focus in particular on initiatives that campaign for an open and diverse society – for example the Cologne association SOFRA Queer Migrants e.V., which Cologne Pride or the Run of Colours in Cologne.

Social cohesion

We regularly take action ourselves: during the coronavirus pandemic, EAT HAPPY teams all over Germany repeatedly delivered fresh sushi to doctors, nurses and support staff in hospitals, providing a welcome change of meal in everyday pandemic life. We also support local organisations such as Care 4 Cologne, which Deutsche Lebensbrücke and the Aktion Lichtblicke in their projects for people in need and for children.

International commitment

We are also committed nationally and internationally: in 2020 EAT HAPPY supported a Bridge building in Vietnam , to give children a safe route to school in the long term. At the same time, we provided fresh drinking water, food and shelter in flood-hit areas with the help of donations. For the 2021 flood disaster in Germany, for those affected by the war in Ukraine in 2022 and for the earthquake-hit regions of Türkiye and Syria in 2023, we made monetary donations through aid organisations. We also helped with the clean-up in the Ahr valley and campaigned for the reception of refugees from Ukraine.

At EAT HAPPY, only high-quality ingredients make it onto the plate, and we turn them into a wide range of fresh and innovative products. We are aware of the responsibility that comes with this and place great value on transparency. Here you can find out what defines us:

25 per cent veggie share

We have been refining our vegetarian and vegan range since long before our OnlyPlants campaign in 2022: vegan sushi creations have been part of EAT HAPPY since the company was founded in 2013. Today, 25 per cent of the entire EAT HAPPY range is already vegetarian or vegan – and, in the interests of sustainability, we are working on many more vegetarian and vegan alternatives.

Highest quality

High-quality ingredients and expert preparation are decisive when it comes to the quality of our products. But strict requirements along the supply chain, needs-based training for employees and regular checks also help ensure that our sushi meets the highest quality standards across all locations.

What it says on the label is what is inside

EAT HAPPY stands for quality and transparency – both in the requirements we set for suppliers and in our labelling and information. As required by law, ingredients, allergens and additives are clearly labelled. What it says on the label is what is inside – EAT HAPPY customers with and without allergies and intolerances can rely on this.
